A Professional Photographers Tips For Styling Your Wardrobe

How do you style the perfect wardrobe for a photoshoot?

One of my favorite genres of professional photography is portrait photography. However, to make amazing images there is a lot more involved in the process than people who are not professional photographers may realize. Here is just a sample short list of what I mean:

  • What backdrop should we use or what location will we shoot at?
  • What is the theme or idea of the shoot?
  • What is the mood of the shoot?
  • What lights will I need for this shoot to accomplish a certain look?
  • Will I need assistants to hold lights, hold scrims, carry equipment, etc.?
  • Do we need a permit to shoot or permission from a property owner?
  • Do we need hair and makeup?
  • Do we need set styling?
  • Do we need a wardrobe stylist?

And, like I said before this is just the short list. It is also why I love wedding photography too because almost all these factors have already been taken care of and are arranged by someone else. The other side of that though, is that all the creative potential is placed in someone else’s hands instead of my own and my super talented team of associates.

The other thing to consider is also the budget of my clients. The more complex and time-consuming photoshoots that require more staff are going to have more expenses that raise the overall price of the photoshoot for our clients.

6 tips on how to style your wardrobe for a photoshoot

An outfit for a photoshoot should be carefully chosen to flatter the subject and coordinate with any props or backgrounds involved. Here are some tips for styling the perfect wardrobe for a photoshoot:

  1. Choose classic silhouettes and neutral colors: Choose pieces in neutral colors such as black, white, grey, and pastel hues. Classic silhouettes will create timeless and sophisticated photos.
  2. Think about layers: Layers can add dimension and interest to a photo. Consider adding jackets, scarves, and hats to your outfit.
  3. Consider the look of fabrics: Try on different fabrics to determine which ones photograph best. Satin, velvet, and chiffon can be beautiful choices for photoshoots.
  4. Accessorize strategically: Accessories such as jewelry, bags, belts, and shoes can complete an outfit but should not overpower it; select pieces that complement rather than distract from the overall look of the photo.
  5. Test out makeup looks beforehand: Test out different makeup looks before the day of the shoot, so you know what works best on camera; use light eyeshadow shades with muted lip colors for soft, natural beauty or experiment with smoky eyeshadow or darker lips if desired!
  6. Look online for ideas and inspiration. Websites like Pinterest, Vanity Fair and Vogue can help give you ideas and inspiration when you feel like you need it.
